Luminous, vertical, rear-screen projection with stereo sound. Installation, London, 2006.

Physical Description:

Made from free or cheap or swapped pre-existing 3D models downloaded from the internet - what I call 'Digital ReadyMades' - a scene is constructed. The act of browsing on the internet becomes a method of narrative association between objects. Out of intensive browsing enough models are downloaded that can hold together as a complete and immersive environment. Free sound samples have also been downloaded and are assigned to each object. The growling radio space sounds get louder as they approach the camera or eye. The scene feels very abandoned, something contrasted with the kitschness of the chosen objects. The retro feel of the environment adds to the feeling that perhaps this is a trip back in time. The camera loops around the environment surveying the objects and scene as if it is some kind of alien recording device. The last object to appear is a small glass cube that spins in space next to a table clock. These two items locate both the science fiction context for the work as well as the notion that the film is a recording 'through time'. After the cube has spun the camera once again travels the room in exactly the same path. This time, whilst still the 'same' environment, all the textures and objects have changed.

I have used this animation site-specifically in exhibitions where there has been opportunity. The idea of the animation as a kind of haunting is developed by using it close to specific features in the building.
