CURATORIAL:

A series of curatorial propositions and structures that often investigate curating as
an architectural process, resulting in 'Social Structures for Enabling', enabling:
Event, The Social, Pleasure and a Living Anthropology of Display.

Curatorial projects have taken three forms; 'temporarycontemporary' a project with Jen Wu
that was first a project space and studios in Deptford, South East London, now an occasional
curatorial entity producing off-site exhibitions and actions (www.tempcontemp.co.uk).

The second is 'structures for display', designs for physical structures for exhibitions developed collaboratively.

Finally are the studio building(s), combining artistic and curatorial practice within architectural infrastructures.

'The Old Police Station' - www.tempcontemp.co.uk/oldpolicestation.html

Brought to you by Anthony Gross of temporarycontempoary, the Old Police
Station is an artist-run project in the form of a propositional
'do-it-yourself art centre'. It is an experimental cultural and economic
model that aims at least for self-sufficiency.

Laden with police processes and signage, the facility is an archaeology of
institutional structures with period rooms, cinematic prison cells, an old
gym and operations yard. For the next 7 years, this architectural
infrastructure will house 30 studios, multiple gallery and rehearsal
rooms, independent project spaces, a potential residency programme, an
on-line radio station - and a 'Members Club', the social hub of the building.

temporarycontemporary takes up residence at GSK Contemporary, the new contemporary season at The Royal Academy, 6 Burlington Gardens. Event Horizon appears in the form of a social club and sculpture rooms, where ‘sculpture becomes event’, examining installation and DIY social culture through nearly three months of actions and exhibitions.

Conceived to explore the dynamics of contemporary art and its relationship to other art forms, the GSK Contemporary season is curated by David Thorp. An extensive range of international artists from Europe, Asia and the US will participate in over 100 exhibitions, live events, film screenings, symposia, performance, experimental theatre and music.

Within this major new contemporary season, temporarycontemporary present Event Horizon, an occupation and programme of new commissions by London-based artists unfolding throughout the season tracing a timeline of sculpture transforming into social experience.

A social club installation by temporarycontemporary in the neo-classical ‘Senate Room’ functions as an infrastructure housing over 30 nights of live events including performances, artist residencies, club nights, music, banquets, poker and more. The social club hosts a bar-by-night by Bistrotheque and café-by-day by Elaine Chalmers and Douglas McFarlane.

2007 ’INTOPOSITION’, Vienna, Bauernmarkt 1 and 9, 1010 Vienna, 25 Sep - 7 Oct 2007

INTOPOSITION is a project which supports and communicates the activities of the younger Viennese artscene, as well as introduces international artists and independent art spaces in Vienna.

This show invites the participation of temporarycontemporary to bring a discussion to the Vienna art scene about self-organisation and navigating the mainstream with alternate models, modes and behaviours of production. This episode, curated by Anthony Gross and Jen Wu, focuses on the practice - and alternate practice - of Reza Aramesh, Mark Pearson (also presenting Howard Dyke), Luke Oxley and John Russell in turn looking at the Centrefold Scrapbook, Backlands and Frozen Tears projects. It is the second part in an on-going project (see SPACE INVASION below).

This September INTOPOSITION brings a spectacular event to Vienna - 8 positions with contributions by David Shrigley, Spike Magazine, curators Elsy Lahner, Emanuel Layr, THE LAB with Peter Fischli / David Weiss, Roman Signer and many more. More detailed information about the Vienna project at www.intopos.com

’Work Place Cabinet’,
Unit 1, 117-119 Denmark Road, London SE5 9LB

After combining the project space and studios at The Old Seager Distillery in Deptford (temporarycontemporary's HQ from 2004-2006, demolished end 2006), it became clear that due to property speculation and the process of 'gentrification', artist studio buildings would need to find another economic model in order to exist. Work Place Cabinet takes the form of a warehouse conversion that can provide permanent and rent- controlled studios and curatorial offices.

"The idea for a 'Work Place Cabinet' was invigorated with extended visits to China (British Council Artist links Residency 2006) with it's surge of artist-business activity in the Chaoyang district represented by amongst others, Ai Wei Wei's building for Urs Meile and AWW's own studio complex. Whilst clearly very much responding to the current climate in China, this activity seems to echo London in the mid 90's, the YBA art + entrepreneur practice + London property boom and bust. Now, in late 2008, London finds itself in a new economic circumstance that will create an artist and artist studio boom: recession, inflation, property boom and bust, property developments on hold etc etc. This is exactly when inventive and new economic/artistic models should be tested".

’Pool Hall Frieze’, proposal with Jen Wu shorlisted for the Frieze-Cartier Award.
A proposal for a structure covered in woodgrain effect Fablon plastic coating. This 'pool hall' contains three pool tables that are free to play. We would invite players from the Camberwell Snooker Hall to play all day everyday during the Frieze opening hours. The internal walls of the hall are lined with artworks, a curated group show of London-based artists in vitrines. Playing is free and if you beat one of our players you get to choose an artwork of your choice. The sold artworks would be replaced by a polaroid photgraph of the winner shaking hands with the pool player. Whilst obviously a witty critique in the context of an art fair, the project also brings other qualities to the fair, the notion of the dive, the hang out, the hussle, the wager, art as trophy...

’Metropolis Rise : New Art from London’. Shanghai + Beijing April/May 06

Group show curated by Anthony Gross and Jen Wu touring to the Moganshan area of Shanghai and the 798 Space in Beijing. Including 58 artists from the London scene and a 198 page colour publication with essays in English and Chinese by David Burrows, David Madella, Suhail Malik and others. Supported by Arts Council England, British Council Shanghai, British Council Beijing, CQL Centre, Bizart and Thinking Hands.

Here we developed reading table structures that can be repeated and adapted to suit sculpture, video, photography, ephemera etc. The light wood tables reference both an anthropoligical display as well as a customs inspection desk. This allows one to take a different view of the idea of a 'survey' instead creating something more immediate, less museological. The customs notion address our thoughts on 'import / export' for this exhibition: going against the grain to 'import' UK art rather than 'export' art from China as would be the expectation. In this sense this exhibition, in fact the first survey show of art from the UK, breaks new ground and looks forward to the next stage of China's development culturally...
