Bio:
Anthony Gross (b Greenwich, London 1968). French/German parents, son of Jean-Pierre Gross published author on the French Revolution, grandson of Anthony Gross RA CBE of Hungarian origin, British war artist and experimental printmaker/animator, great grandson of the creators of A-Z maps. Lived Brussels 1979 to 1986. European Baccalaureate. French National Service. Returned to England to study Architecture at The Bartlett (under Peter Cook). Guest student at Karlsruhe art academy (under Michael Sandle). Worked in Architecture (under Renzo Piano, Genoa). Studied MA Fine Art Goldsmiths College. Extended visits to Los Angeles and China. Curatorial projects as 'temporarycontemporary' with Jen Wu. 'temporarycontemporary studios' launched 2007. Currently based in London.Using digital media Gross creates images and animations that sit within imagined architectural meta-structures. Sometimes this results in physical structures such as Sculpture Unit at the V&A or LED Eyes on The Royal Academy portico, but mostly as site-specific animation installations such as Object Passing at The Economist and Digital Forest at Piccadilly Tube Station.Early works use the fragmented self as a basis for computer modeling, cutting up 3D self portraits (AutoBody LA, Muscle) originally inspired by video game avatars. These works were then followed by a series of projects looking at the mediatised self, multiple/repeated characters in the form of advertising models and boy bands (Culture of One, Band of One). Most recently, animations have focused on the environments that characters could inhabit, shifting places that slip between eras, retro and sci-fi, real and imagined (Object Passing, Digital Forest, The New Museum). Running through all the work is ultimately an examination of consciousness - the projection of the imagined self at a particular moment in time. This is manifested through specific formal devices through looping, doubling, repeating, splitting and mutation, and through narrative devices such as the idea of portals, teleporting and occupying multiple times (From Here to Eternity, Object Passing, 1000 Years Poolside and 1000 Years Empire). Throughout is a strong graphic language that uses as its basis shared icons, a digital vocabulary of familiar props culled from internet browsing and then customised for site-specific use.In a way, the artistic practice addresses the inverted personal word whereas the curated projects very much take for their subject matter The Social.

Solo Exhibitions

2007

'Retrogeno', ICA commission, ICA, The Mall, London
Vinyl banner approx 200 x 800 cm for ICA bar.

Following on from previous ideas of teleportation, or rather, a slippage of time, an image that references perhaps Los Angeles in the 1950 is installed as 'wallpaper' in the ICA bar. Whist the image is a simple graphic consisting of a repeating pattern, it starts to act virally, subtly changing the sense one has of a place and time. On closer inspection the pattern reveals itself to be some kind of corrupted DNA strand.

2005

'Platform for Art', Piccadilly Circus, London, March 23 - June 15.
Commission of public work.

A 'forest' image made from millions of 3D-modelled leaves creating a large panorama in the tube station ticket hall in the tradition of the diorama. An escapist and hyper-saturated artificial environment that the commuter can past along, at points camouflage and at points a clearing.

detail of ticket hall panorama, showing approx 4m from a 12m image.
One of 5 images located around the ticket hall and subway entrance.

2004

2004

Production’, The London Print Studio, London

Large installation of 10 digital prints and 4 animations
in the form of an abstracted narrative. A cloned boyband (Electric-Orpheus) passes through a mediatised underworld. Kinetic occurrences and fractures occurr at a succession of liminal mediatised sites.
