'Object Passing', 2004-5 Series of mirror-mounted Lambda duratrans. Each 134 x 174 cm plus a 2 channel video installation, silent.
Left: 'Object Passing - Kyoto', 2004-5. 134 x 174 cm. Kyoto and Los Angeles are mirrored in a kind of parallel existence. Each place is made up from the same basic computer objects but slightly tweaked with new textures or replaced with similar objects each carrying different associations. Below:

Physical Description: This work followed 'From Here to Eternity II' and also uses teleportation as an experiential starting point. In this case though, I approached the project with the idea of a transmutable 'place' rather than an object that moves. To do this I created a complex computer-modelled environment similar to a Case Study House. I was able to create the house and populate it with objects exclusively using ready made 3D models downloaded from the internet (that I have termed 'Digital ReadyMades'). These objects are traded for, i.e. downloaded for free, requested, purchased for a few dollars and sometimes more expensive kits of objects are purchased but only for a couple of relevant items. The environment is a direct metaphor for a virtual space populated by people that I can move through. It also represents an Economy. A film of the environment was produced by passing a camera slowly around the space, around furniture and through walls. The entire environment was then duplicated and every object and texture map carefully replaced with substitutes. The new place is also entirely populated by Digital ReadyMades although some custom textures for the house walls and floors were hand made. The exact same film was made, using the same camera duplicated into the new environment. The resulting effect is one space that seems like a Los Angeles house of the 60's and another space more akin to a contemporary Japanese penthouse apartment. An object of 'shared similitude' was chosen, a plate of Sushi, which was to become the 'portal' moment of transport from one environment to another. The two films are presented synched side by side with LA on one side and Kyoto on the other. Each time the Sushi is reached the environments swap screens. The 'object' that is passing is the camera, but notionally it is the temporal condition between the two spaces. A series of production stills have been produced, two to date but 6 intended in total. These are 'reflected' images of the two environments, diptychs of the dual space that are not animation stills. These images are produced as Duratrans, Lambda transparencies that are then sandwiched between glass and mirror and then mounted in a substantial angled wood frame. As the light catches the image caught between layers of mirror and glass refection, a luminous holographic effect is produced. The vibrant liminal state of the image is related to the ideas of immersion. |
